About
hello!
Thanks for stopping by to visit...
This website captures ideas, progress, and projects that I'm working on at the intersection of science and design research. It's a grassroots effort, and with colleagues, we are interested in thinking differently about the way we advance discovery and invention from the "outside in". We are building a community of interest around the themes outlined in the pages here -- and as the community grows, this website will evolve to reflect that.
A bit more about me: scientist by training, designer by immersion, and integrator by nature. A full bio is available here.
Organizations that I've been affiliated with (current and former): Stanford University, American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS), National Academy of Science (NAS), Global Young Academy (GYA), Penn State University, and University of Waterloo.
Favorite scientific concept: "keystone species" from the field of ecology. I'm fascinated by the idea of a particular group having an outsized (positive) contribution to an ecosystem relative to its numbers.
Favorite design concept: "active empathy" which is the ability to sense and then take action in a way that results in a positive interaction dynamic behavior during team work.
