SEADS Workshop

SEADS Workshop

Scientific and Designerly Approaches
to Knowledge Creation

What is the SEADS Workshop?

The aim of the SEADS (Shared Exploration Across Science & Design) workshop was to bring scientific and design researchers together to develop a shared understanding of each other's research and discovery approaches.

This cross disciplinary dialog sought to build collaboration capacities across these two fields.  The limited-size gathering was to enable participants to get to know each other one-on-one, while working towards building a framework for collaboration.  Participants were researchers from a broad range of sub-disciplines within science and design (see names of contributors below).

Hosted by Stanford University, Center for Design Research and sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts.

Emergent Themes

During the workshop, we encouraged participants to learn about each other’s disciplines by sharing of cultural and research practices.  We covered topics that were pertinent to both fields:  novelty, risk, research and knowledge aspiration, work and physical environment, bottlenecks and challenges, and willingness to collaborate.

Here are some themes that emerged and were captured in real-time as the discussions unfolded.  Graphics by Erik Jacobson of Three Story Studio: The Design of Information

Outcomes and Ongoing Work

  • compilation of perspectives on science + design research approaches, collaboration interests, project ideas, needs, and challenges

  • framework for developing co-creation strategies across scientists and designers

  • understanding what designers want to know and understand about Science? (and scientists about design).

  • community building:  co-authored manuscripts and proposals (in development), invited talks, and planning of future activities to expand beyond this initial experiment

  • dissemination of workshop findings (links will be provided here)
